About this Title
In the South-East European Biographical Archive (SOBA), biographical information is compiled alphabetically on Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro.
By virtue of its special geographical location between Europe and Asia, the Balkan Peninsula for centuries represented an area of tension, the dynamics of which can still be felt today.
The intercontinental cultural exchange and the resulting diversity are reflected in the approximately 100,000 biographies of the South-East European Biographical Archive which covers the period from the 9th century to the present day. Individuals who have influenced the cultural, political, religious and economic life of this region have been included in the Archive.
In order to provide the fullest picture possible for the history of the Balkans, about 200 reference works, published from 1711 to 1995, were evaluated – not only in the respective south-east European languages, Romanian, Bulgarian, Albanian, Serbo-Croat, Slovenian and Macedonian, but also in German, English, French and Italian.
