About this Title

For the Korean Biographical Archive (KBA) about 85,000 biographical entries from c. 150 source works encompassing more than 270 volumes published until 1999 were cumulated. The comprehensive source list also includes biographical material from scientific journals and yearbooks.

The Korean Biographical Archive contains biographical entries on men and women from all periods of Korean history. The KBA covers more than 45,000 people: from King Tangun, the founder of the legendary kingdom Choson, to King Sejong who introduced the Korean alphabet in the 15th century, and the political representatives of modern Korea. Individuals from all social levels and occupational groups are included, along with Korean emigrants and foreign scientists, missionaries, diplomats, artists, businesspersons etc., who have influenced Korea’s development.

The biographies are written in Korean, English, German, and French. Entries for approximately 20,000 persons, derived from Korean standard works, and have been provided with abstracts written specifically for the Korean Biographical Archive in English. These abstracts make the biographical material accessible to readers without any knowledge of the Korean language and accompany the original Korean texts.
