New Publications Catalog Philosophy 2007/08
Dear Reader ,
De Gruyter’s philosophy programme will be
extended and enriched through the Handbook of
Political and Social Philosophy (p. 20). There has
never been such a wideranging
and sophisticated
reference work in German for the contemporary
state of research in these two areas. This
handbook is a philosophical lexicon in the widest
sense, as it deals with relevant issues in practical
philosophy beyond standard political and
social philosophy, as well as considers the questions,
methods, and results of neighbouring
fields outside the borders of traditional philosophy.
As such, the book is an indispensable tool
for teaching and research, as well as for everyone
interested in socialpolitical
topics.
In addition, we are happy to announce five more titles in the recently started and much acclaimed series Fundamental Themes in Philosophy. This series encompasses a wide spectrum of philosophy’s fundamental questions like free will, personhood, the perfecting of humankind, the good life, and explanation (p. 3ff.).
The new series Human Project is dedicated to the
place of humans in nature (p. 20). Leading representatives
of the natural and social sciences
and the humanities enter in a dialogue in order
to reflect the place of the selfunderstanding
of
man in view of new challenges from the sciences.
Above all, the dialogue attempts to shed light on
the fundamental beliefs within each area of study
and acquire a clear and mutual understanding of
each field’s terminology and concepts.
We are excited that the area of ancient philosophy
has been strengthened by uniting the classics
programmes from de Gruyter and the former
B.G Teubner at the beginning of this year. This
resulted in an increased significance of this subject,
both through the tradition-rich
Bibliotheca
Teubneriana (p. 8) and newlyfounded
edition
projects. In 2008, a fundamental new edition
of the preSocratic
thinkers will start, the first
accompanying volume is published in the new
series Studia Praesocratica (p. 6).
The edition and monograph series Commentaria
in Aristotelem Graeca et Byzantina (p. 8) is dedicated
to the antique and lateantique
commentaries
on Aristotle. Greek philosophical and scientific
texts lost in the original but preserved in
the Arab scientific tradition are the focus of the
new series Scientia Graeco-Arabica
(p. 9).
We at the editorial office hope you enjoy rummaging through our directory of new releases and our homepage.
Yours,
Dr. Gertrud Grünkorn
