Biography
Born 1946 in Copenhagen, NHP studied mathematics at the Univ. of Copenhagen (master’s degree 1969) and Univ. of Oslo, Norway (post-graduate studies). He took up theological studies in 1972, working as a parish vicar in The Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church until 1989. He took his ph.d. in theology (Univ. of Copenhagen) in 1994 specializing in medieval liturgy and drama. In 2002, he became centre leader at the Centre for the Study of the Cultural Heritage of Medieval Rituals, erected by The Danish National Research Foundation and the University of Copenhagen.
NHP has participated in international research collaborations, supported by National and Nordic Research Councils. He has published on medieval liturgy and music drama, cultural history and theology, as well as medievalism. He is a member of the editorial board of Studies in Medievalism (Boydell and Brewer, USA) and general editor of the book series Ritus et Ates: Traditions and Transformations (Brepols, Belgium).
NHP grew up in a family where contemporary classical music was an integrated part of life. He has composed music since childhood, and studied composition with Danish composers Ib Nørholm and Per Nørgård. Compositions include chamber music, and 3 operas. His compositions have been supported by the Danish Arts Foundation on several occasions. He was awarded the Hakon Børresen memorial prize in 1993.
