Biography
Born 1950; Dr. theol. 1982 and Habilitation 1987 at Goettingen University; Professor of Old Testament at Zurich University 1989-1992, at Hamburg University 1992-1999, at Goettingen University since 1999; dean of the Theological Faculty of Hamburg University in 1995-1997; guest-professorship at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome in 1999; honorary doctorate of the University of Lund in 2000; regular member of the Academy of Sciences in Goettingen since 2002; member of the board of the International Organization for the Study of the Old Testament (IOSOT) since 2004; currently speaker of the DFG Research Training Group (GK 896) „Images of Gods, of God and of the World“; currently dean of the Theological Faculty of Goettingen University.

Main fields of research: history of religion in the Ancient Near East and in the Mediterranean world; prayers and wisdom literature in the Old Testsament and in Antiquity; Biblical Theology and hermeneutics; major encyclopedical enterprises.
