Biography
Born in 1940, Innsbruck, Austria. Studies of Theology and Judaism in Austria, England, France and Italy. Dr. theol. Innsbruck 1967, lic. rer. bibl. Pontificio Istituto Biblico, Rome 1968.1968-69 Research Assistant, Duke University, Durham, NC, USA. Research in Jerusalem and Rome. Since 1972 at the Institute of Jewish Studies of the University of Vienna für Judaistik der Universität Wien, 1974 Habilitation, since 1977 Professor, 1984-86 simultaneously teaching at the University of Cologne, Germany.

Corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Dr. theol. h.c. Goettingen.

Main fields of interest: History, literature and religion of Judaism in late antiquity and the early middle ages.
