Biography
Holds Doctor Divinitatis (New Testament) and Doctor Philosophiae (Greek). Professor in New Testament Studies since 1986 at the Faculty of Theology, University of Pretoria. Adjunct professor at as well as personal advisor to rector of the Christian University of St Petersburg. Received Alexander von Humboldt fellowship, is member of the Centre of Theological Inquiry (Princeton); Mercator International Professor (Germany); Beeson International visiting Scholar (Asbury Theological Seminary). Member of editorial board of and presently general editor of Review of Biblical Literature. Received award as ‘outstanding academic achiever’ several times from the University of Pretoria and is currently on highest ranking by the National Research Council of South Africa held by (non-retired) theologian in South Africa. Tyndale fellow and member of the South African Academy of Arts and Science. Published 40 books inter alia a translation of the New Testament in Afrikaans (with S. Joubert), translation of OT and several NT apocryphal books as well as some early Church Fathers into Afrikaans, Authored Family of the King. Dynamics of metaphor in the Gospel according to John. Brill: Leiden, 2000. Editor of Salvation in the New Testament. Perspectives on soteriology. Brill:Leiden, 2005 and Christology and theology in the Gospel of John. Peters:Leuven, 2005 (with G. van Belle). Published about 70 articles in journals and books.
