The TRE resumes the work carried out on the threshold of the 20th century for the Realencyclopädie für protestantische Theologie und Kirche (3rd edition Leipzig 1896-1913) (English edition: The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge, 13 vols., Grand Rapids, Mich. 1951-1954). Access to the work is provided via a transparent system of indexes (biblical references, places, names, objects). With its comprehensive coverage (all 36 volumes have already appeared) the TRE is an indispensable tool and reference work for theologians, scholars in the humanities, and all those interested in religion and theology.
