Dear Reader,
One of our main goals at De Gruyter Mouton is to keep up with the needs of academics, and with the demands of a rapidly changing information market. That is why De Gruyter Mouton, alongside its parent company De Gruyter, has invested in new technologies insuring constant and up-to-date electronic access to its content. De Gruyter is among the first academic publishers in the world to provide electronic access to its journals, books, and databases on a single platform – Reference Global: www.reference-global.com.
And because we can look back on a long history of more than 250 years in the publishing business, De Gruyter is well aware of the valuable resources tucked away in its archives. In order to unearth the buried treasures and make them available again, we are now digitizing nearly 100 of our active journals going back to volume 1, issue 1. As of autumn 2009, 887,000 pages in the field of language and linguistics alone will be accessible online. And to ensure that our content remains secure, we have signed a contract with the American-based company www.portico.org to provide permanent electronic archiving. Please see page 44 for more information.
Investing in and keeping up with new technological developments in the publishing industry is, no doubt, an important pillar of a publishing company; competent, reliable personell is another one. You’ve known the “faces behind the scene at Mouton” for many years (see page 45). We have now added a new face to the team: Ms. Cathleen Petree has been appointed as our US-based Senior Acquisitions Editor. Cathleen will serve as a direct point of contact for North American authors and will spearhead new US acquisitions in linguistics. You can reach her at cpetree@degruyterny.com.
Although this past year has been important for us in terms of technological advancement, we would also like to draw your attention to some of our highlighted titles: the revised and updated third edition of our Encyclopedic Dictionary of Semiotics (includes online access to the dictionary) on page 9; our new journals and yearbooks (pages 36–44), and our new series Trends in Applied Linguistics (page 23, 35), Semiotics, Communication and Cognition (page 29, 34), and [X] in the Languages of the World (page 15, 35).
All of us at De Gruyter Mouton are committed to work towards the advancement of the field and to the satisfaction of our customers. We invite you to browse our program!
Cordial greetings on behalf of all of us at Mouton,
DE GRUYTER MOUTON
