Studien zur Wahrnehmung des Alexandrinischen Schismas in Reichsitalien (1159–1177)
[Caught in the Middle. Studies on the Perception of the Alexandrine Schism in Imperial Italy (1159–1177)]
Series:Bibliothek des Deutschen Historischen Instituts in Rom 125
Aims and Scope
The Alexandrine Schism (1159–1177) has generally been interpreted as a conflict between Pope Alexander III and Friedrich I Barbarossa. In contrast to past research, this study uses privately held original sources to examine different perceptions of this ecclesiastical crisis across imperial Italy, and explores the strategic responses of those below the highest level of political power to the demands for absolute obedience made on the part of rival factions.
