Aims & Scope

The Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie [Archive for the History of Philosophy] is one of the world's leading academic journals specializing in the history of philosophy. The Archiv publishes exceptional scholarship in all areas of western philosophy from antiquity through the twentieth century.

The journal insists on the highest scholarly standards and values precise argumentation and lucid prose. Articles should reflect the current state of the best international research while advancing the field's understanding of a historical author, school, problem, or concept. The journal has a broad international readership and a rich history.

The Archiv was founded in 1888 by Ludwig Stein. As a pupil and close collaborator of Eduard Zeller, Stein was committed to an approach to the history of philosophy characterized by sober-minded critical engagement and precise argument. This vision still guides the journal. Its former contributors have included such prominent scholars as C.I. Gerhardt, Wilhelm Dilthey, Arthur Lovejoy, Alexandre Koyré, Ernst Cassirer, Carl Gebhardt, Jan Patočka, Martial Guéroult, Michael Frede, and Margaret Dauler Wilson.

The Archiv für die Geschichte der Philosophie appears triannually with a yearly length of approximately 360 pages. It has three editors, two in Europe and one in North America -- Christoph Horn (Bonn), Wolfgang Bartuschat (Hamburg), and Christia Mercer (New York). Submitted manuscripts are first reviewed by an editorial board composed of internationally renowned scholars and then by specialists in the relevant field. Articles are published in German, English, and French. In addition to publishing articles and reviews, the journal occasionally features a "Zur Diskussion" section in which particularly controversial positions are debated. There is also space provided for short primary texts that have not been previously published.
