Aims & Scope
The Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie [Archive for the History of Philosophy] is one of the world's leading academic journals for research in the history of philosophy. The Archive publishes outstanding papers on all periods of Western philosophy from antiquity up to the twentieth century.
The Archive insists on the highest standards of historical accuracy and argumentative precision. A lucid and transparent prose style should be employed throughout. Articles should reflect the current state of research while at the same time substantially advancing our knowledge of a historical author, school, problem, or concept.
The Archive was founded in 1888 by Ludwig Stein. As a pupil and close collaborator of the great Eduard Zeller, Stein was committed to a form of philosophical historiography that proceeds rationally, objectively, and critically while taking care to avoid prejudice. This vision still guides the journal today. The Archive regards itself as an international journal in which different specialist traditions have a role to play.
The Archive for the History of Philosophy appears annually in three issues with a total length of approximately 360 pages. It has two European editors, Wolfgang Bartuschat (Hamburg) and Christoph Horn (Bonn), as well as an American one, Christia Mercer (New York). In reviewing submitted manuscripts, they are supported by an editorial board composed of internationally renowned scholars from a variety of specialist fields. Articles can be published in German, English, French and Italian. In addition to publishing articles and reviews, the journal occasionally features an "Under Discussion" section, in which particularly controversial positions are given a forum. There is also space provided for short primary texts that have not previously been published.
