De Gruyter Mouton - Our History

In 1977, De Gruyter acquired the publishing company Mouton Publishers, which Pierre-François Mouton founded in Paris in 1858. Mouton Publishers focused strongly on linguistics, semiotics, and anthropology. The merger with De Gruyter created De Gruyter Mouton as a dedicated imprint for publishing linguistic and cultural studies works.

Throughout the years, De Gruyter Mouton has expanded its portfolio, publishing numerous influential books, reference works, and journals in the fields of linguistics, semiotics, and cultural studies. The company has embraced digital publishing and now offers electronic versions of its publications alongside traditional print formats.

Today, De Gruyter Mouton remains a prominent publisher in the field, actively contributing to the advancement of linguistic research and scholarship worldwide. Researchers, academics, and students in the disciplines of language and cultural studies widely use and highly regard its publications. What our authors say

“The contemporary academic publishing landscape is extremely challenging, particularly for those of us who wish to maintain standards of rigour and quality in general. I have extensive experience with numerous publishers and I am both an author and co-editor of two series with De Gruyter Mouton. I chose De Gruyter Mouton for the latter, especially, because of their commitment to the core academic virtues and their determination to facilitate the higher learning in the most efficient ways possible. That De Gruyter Mouton are blessed with congenial staff, from editorial through production and marketing, is of a piece with their entire operation."

Professor Paul Cobley

Middlesex University London, United Kingdom

“The contribution that De Gruyter Mouton has made to the sociology of language has been invaluable for the development of the field. As co-editor of the book series Contributions to the Sociology of Language, first with Joshua A. Fishman, its founder, and now with Francis Hult, and as past editor of The International Journal of the Sociology of Language, I have been impressed by the support that De Gruyter Mouton’s editors and staff have given me as editor, as well as authors. They are not only professionals; they are committed to the development of ideas and to collaboration. Mouton’s editors ensure that the work is sent out for review in a timely manner and that the communication with authors and editor is open and supportive all the way to production. It is rare indeed to find such commitment from a publisher.”

Professor Ofelia García

The Graduate Center, City University of New York, USA

“As series editor at De Gruyter Mouton, I can entertain a truly constructive dialogue with my scientific community: projects are discussed in depth, improved by constant exchanges between the editors, the authors and the publisher’s staff, and subject to thorough review processes. Once they come to completion, they are made available to a broad public by means of constantly improving distribution strategies. With De Gruyter I can follow each project being assisted at every step by an outstanding professional team. And it is great to know that we are all working towards the same goals: to publish excellent scholarship and to contribute to our discipline’s progress.“

Dr. Chiara Gianollo

“Mouton’s publications were an inspiration to me even during my student days. They were well produced and some of them were downright revolutionizing (think of Chomsky’s Syntactic Structures). So when it came to publishing my first book, Mouton was an obvious choice. The publishing house provided excellent support in producing the volume, and its perfect distribution system assured that it was widely read and used. My experience has been similar with later publication projects. I benefited from the same care and support as an editor for several Mouton publication series, as well as in the production of Folia Linguistica Historica when I was editing the journal. During my interactions with Mouton I have dealt with a series of different editors-in-chief, and to my great joy, each one of them was extremely supportive. I look forward to working on future projects with Mouton, aided by its excellent, competent, and friendly editors and support staff.”
