Abstract

The close of Theocritus 24 (Herakliskos) is preserved only in the Antinoë codex of the 5th or 6th century and is re-examined here. It is apparent that Teiresias' speech came exactly in the middle of the poem. The ending of the poem described Heracles' apotheosis, his wedding with Hebe and the poet's wish for a victory; it turns out to be an important model for the ending of Virgil's fourth Eclogue.
