The present article concludes the research that has resulted in two volumes of etiological (explanatory) tales: Contes et légendes de Suède (Paris 2002) and Contes et légendes dAllemagne (in coll. with Reinhard Kaiser, to be published in 2004). The author undertakes the analysis of three main characteristics of the etiological tale: (1) the idea of perpetual Creation, (2) the didactic character of these texts reflecting their peculiar concept of justice, and (3) their attempt to integrate some elements of archaic beliefs into a basically Christian vision of the world.
