Picht, Barbara

Citation Information: Internationales Archiv fr Sozialgeschichte der deutschen Literatur (IASL). Volume 36, Issue 2, Pages 373–380, ISSN (Online) 1865-9128, ISSN (Print) 0340-4528, DOI: 10.1515/iasl.2011.026, November 2011

Alfred Andersch's novel Winterspelt has been read again and again as a story about freedom. It demonstrates, however, the limits of freedom almost with resignation. Like Alexander Kluge, Andersch confronts documentary with fiction, but literature and fiction have no clear advantage. On the contrary: In order to be authentic, literature like historiography has to mark its own limitations.
