This essay asks for a revival of the dialogue between historical science and the literary studies for two reasons: First, history and literature are natural partners when it comes to research on the production and reception of literature in dynamic historical contexts. Second, both disciplines can benefit greatly from historico-literary collaboration, especially a culturally informed political history which is interested in literature as a powerful generator of symbols.
