Abstract
The metaphor of narrative time as physical speed, hinted at in Genette, is followed through to its logical consequences. The neighbouring concepts of narrative relevance, storytelling, velocity and acceleration are considered as parallels to mechanical distance, velocity and acceleration. The potential of this model is explored with reference to phenomena of retro-active continuity in episodic storytelling, as well as the more general problem of quantifying histoire and discours.
