Instructions for Authors

I. Editorial policy

Photonics & Lasers in Medicine is a peer-reviewed journal which publishes interdisciplinary original contributions, reviews, and case & preliminary research reports from all fields of technical and scientific research and clinical applications of lasers and photonics in medicine for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The journal also publishes editorials, letters, obituaries, congress announcements and reports, news from European laser centers and from the laser societies, and hot topics.

The Editors-in-Chief reserve themselves the right to condense any paper submitted. All manuscripts will be peer-reviewed within 4 weeks. When manuscripts are accepted subject to revision, the revised manuscript should be returned within approx. 2–3 weeks. Accepted papers are promptly published online ahead-of-print as soon as they have been finally processed.

Reviewers: The peers will be selected by the Editors-in-Chief, but the authors may suggest the names and e-mail addresses of up to 2 potential reviewers. Authors may also indicate names of reviewers whom they wish to be excluded from reviewing their manuscripts.

Unpublished material: Submission of a manuscript to Photonics & Lasers in Medicine implies that the work described is not copyrighted, published or submitted elsewhere, except in abstract form. The corresponding author should ensure that all authors approve the manuscript before its submission to Photonics & Lasers in Medicine.

Ethical conduct of research: The authors must describe and confirm safeguards to meet ethical standards.

Conflict of interest: When authors submit a manuscript, they are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial and/or other conflicts of interest that might bias their work and/or could inappropriately influence his/her judgment. If no specified acknowledge¬ment is given, the Publishers assume that no conflict of interest exists.

Copyright: Manuscripts are accepted on condition of transfer of copyright (for U.S. government employees: to the extent transferable) to Photonics & Lasers in Medicine. Once the manuscript is accepted, it may not be published elsewhere without the consent of the copyright holders.

II. Submission of manuscripts

Manuscripts (in WORD) should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/plm. In exceptional cases manuscripts can be submitted by e-mail to the assistant editor, Ms. Daniela Schädel (d.schaedel@LMTB.de).

III. Preparation of manuscripts

Language: Manuscripts should be written in clear and concise English. Please have your text proofread by an English native speaker before you submit it for consideration. At the proof stage, only minor changes other than corrections of printers’ errors are allowed.

Cover letter: Each manuscript should be accompanied by a cover letter containing a brief statement by the authors as to the element of novelty of their research.

General format and length: The length of the manuscripts should be appropriate in relation to the content. The text should be saved as MS Word. Please avoid footnotes in the text.

Articles may be structured as follows:

• Title page (title of paper, first names in full and surnames of all authors without academic titles, full addresses of all authors; corresponding author with academic titles, phone, fax and e-mail).

• Brief English Abstract (preferably structured in: Background and Objective; Study design/Materials and methods; Results; Conclusion).

• English Keywords (max. 5–6, avoid repetition of terms already given in the title).

• Brief Abstract and Keywords in German, and German Title of the paper (only for German speaking authors).

• Introduction (short review of the relevant literature, motivation and objectives of the study).

• Material and Methods (clear description of the experimental set-up and materials used enabling others to reproduce the work – particular care in specifying laser wavelength(s), pulse width(s) or exposure duration(s), focal spot, and treatment energy, power, irradiance, and fluence; evaluation procedure, and description of the used statistical methods).

• Results (concise description of the main results including statistical evaluation; text, tables and figures must be consistent and not repetitious).

• Discussion (differentiated view of the results in relation to the findings of other research groups).

• Conclusion (resume of the findings; wherever applicable, clinical impact and possible application).

• Acknowledgements, if applicable, References, Table and Figure Legends, if applicable.

Nomenclature: Use of SI-units is required.

References: Within the text references should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the text, numbers in square brackets, e.g. „… Hofstetter and Zaak [3]" or „... was discussed [3,7]".

Journal names should be abbreviated. Online resources for full journal names and their abbreviations can be found at:

http://www.library.uq.edu.au/faqs/endnote/biosciences.txt or

http://www.bioscience.org/atlases/jourabbr/list.htm.

References should be given in the following format:

Tables: Submit tables on separate pages and number them cones¬cutively using Arabic numerals. Provide a short descriptive title, column headings, and (if necessary) footnotes to make each table self-explanatory. Refer to tables in the text as Table 1, etc. Use Table 1, etc. in the table legends.

IV. Requirements for figures

General requirements: All illustrations must be of reproduction-ready quality. They will be reduced in size to fit, whenever possible, the width of a single column. Lettering of all figures should be uniform in style. Uppercase letters A, B, C, etc. should be used to identify parts of multi-part figures. Cite all figures in the text in numerical order. Indicate the approximate placement of each figure. Do not embed figures within the text body of the manuscript; submit figures in separate files.

Halftone figures (grayscale and color) should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and be of good contrast. Authors are welcome to submit color illustrations. Authors are encouraged to submit illustrations in color if necessary for their scientific content. Publication of color figures is provided free of charge both in online and print editions.

Line drawings must be of reproduction-ready quality. Please note that faint shading may be lost upon reproduction. When drawing bar graphs, use patterning instead of grey scales. A resolution of 1200 dpi is recommended.

Figure legends: Provide a short descriptive title and a legend to make each figure self-explanatory on separate pages. Explain all symbols used in the figures. Remember to use the same abbreviations as in the text body.

Permissions: It is the authors’ responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce original or modified material that has been previously published.

V. Proofs and off-prints

The electronic files of typeset articles in Adobe Acrobat PDF format are provided free of charge; corresponding authors receive notification that their article has been published online. Paper off-prints can be ordered in addition; an off-print order form will accompany the page proofs and should be completed and returned with the corrected proofs immediately.

VI. Note for authors of NIH-funded research

De Gruyter acknowledges that the author of an US-agency-funded article retains the right to provide a copy of the final manuscript to agency upon acceptance for publication or thereafter, for public archiving in PubMed Central 12 months after publication in Photonics & Lasers in Medicine. Note that only the accepted author's version of the manuscript, not the PDF file of the published article, may be used for NIH archiving.
