Abstract

Generally the scholarly consensus lead the greek term μovαχóς (monk) back to the syriac word îḥîdāyā. Evidences from the targumim, however, make it possible to assume that μovαχóς on its early stages of development which are partly available to us through the Nag Hammadi writings Gospel of Thomas and Dialogue of the Savior might have been influenced by the concept of the Aramaic yəḥyd'a.
