One of the central tasks of the prophets is to move the people to repentance. The theme of repentance is also taken up in the Book of the Twelve Prophets, but it does not form a scarlet thread through the whole collection of the books. It rather constitutes a frame around the Book of the Twelve. The Book of Hosea outlines the theme in its multiplicity and forms together with Joel and Amos the front part of the frame. The back part is constituted by Zechariah and Malachi. The Book of Jonah with the repentance of Niniveh occupies a special position. This frame as well as the call for repentance (except Hos 14,2–4) and the hope of the repentance of YHWH belong to post-exilic times. The Book of the Twelve Prophets is meant to be read as a book of repentance too.
Das Volk zur Umkehr zu bewegen gilt als eine der zentralen Aufgaben der Propheten. Die Umkehrthematik wird auch im Zwölfprophetenbuch aufgegriffen. Jedoch bildet sie keinen die gesamte Schriftensammlung durchziehenden roten Faden. Sie legt sich vielmehr wie ein Rahmen um das Zwölfprophetenbuch. Das Hosea-Buch entwickelt das Thema in seiner Vielfalt und bildet zusammen mit Joel und Amos den vorderen Rahmen. Den hinteren Rahmen formen Sacharja und Maleachi. Das Jona-Buch mit der Umkehr Ninives nimmt eine Sonderstellung ein. Dieser Rahmen sowie die Aufforderung zur Umkehr (außer Hos 14,2–4) und die Hoffnung auf die Umkehr JHWHs sind in nachexilischer Zeit zu verorten. Das Zwölfprophetenbuch will auch als Buch der Umkehr gelesen werden.
