The word ῾zq in Isa 5,2 is a hapax legomenon in the Hebrew Bible. Most scholars take this word to signify digging in the ground. The author of this article aims at greater lexical precision, and suggests that ῾zq is not a general term for digging but rather denotes a distinct type of digging for a specific agricultural purpose – the breaking of clods of earth and the removal of stones from the surface, i.e., »cultivation«.
