Lev 19,18.34 contain the Lord’s commandment to love one’s neighbour and the foreigner »as yourself/he is like you«. In the history of interpretation most often the context was not taken into account. Rather, the explanations concentrated their attention on the meaning of the expressions »neighbour, foreigner« and »as yourself/he is like you«. The context of Lev 19,11–18 is about deceitful vengeance, that of Lev 19,33–34 about brute force against the defenceless. In this light the comparison »to love as yourself« means the impossibility to deceive one-self by cunning or to exploit one-self.
