    Instructions for Authors

The Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und Vorderasiatische Archäologie is published in two issues annually. All communications to the editors, books for review, and manuscripts should be addressed to:

Prof. Dr. Walther Sallaberger, Institut für Assyriologie und Hethitologie,
    Universität München, Geschwister-Scholl-Platz 1, D-80539 München
    Email: WaSa@lmu.de

    1. Submission of manuscripts
    Format
: The preferred method of submission is by email attachment, once as a Word document and once as a PDF file. Using a Unicode font is required. Manuscripts can additionally be sent as a paper copy by regular mail. Authors are kindly requested to supply an abstract of the paper of not more than five lines. Please send photographs and all illustrations electronically in an image file format (e.g. jpg, tiff). The requested resolution for line drawings, graphs etc. is 1200 dpi, for photographs and other illustrations 300 dpi.

    2. Guidelines for formatting
    Work titles
, ancient or modern, may be marked with single quotation marks (‘ ’, e.g. Šurpu or ‘Šurpu’‚ Enūma eliš, ‘Death of Gilgameš’, ‘Ivories from Nimrud’), but not in italics.
Foreign words (including Akkadian, Hittite) should be italicized, e.g. inter alia, apud. The same applies to emphasized words, e.g. “is not the case”.
Footnote tags should be inserted after punctuation marks.

    3. Usage of bibliographical data

Abbreviations. Standard abbreviations should follow the usage of RlA, CAD or AHw. Please indicate in the first footnote which abbreviation index is used and explain any other abbreviations.

References. Two styles of reference are accepted: (1) references in footnotes or (2) citation by author and date along with a bibliography. The latter is preferred, especially for archaeological or historical papers.

    (1) References in footnotes.
In the first quote as follows:

    D. O. Edzard, Enmebaragesi von Kiš, ZA 53 (1959) 9–26.
    P. Machinist/H. Tadmor, Heavenly wisdom, in: M. E. Cohen [e. a.] (ed.), The tablet and the scroll. Near Eastern studies in honor of William W. Hallo (Bethesda 1993) 146–151.
    R. M. Boehmer, Die Entwicklung der Glyptik während der Akkad-Zeit. UAVA 4 (Berlin 1965).
    S. M. Maul, Das Gilgamesch-Epos. Neu übersetzt und kommentiert (München 42008).

Thereafter, literature should be cited with an abbreviated reference:

    Edzard, ZA 53, 17
    Machinist/Tadmor, Fs. Hallo, 147 f.
    Boehmer, UAVA 4, 131–134

In the case of references only to single texts or lines, to lexical discussions etc., one can omit the fuller reference format in favor of abbreviated bibliographical data, e.g.: D. O. Edzard, ZA 53 (1959) 11.

    (2) Citation by author and date.
When using this style of reference, a complete reference list providing full bibliographical details must be appended. This does not apply to text editions (CT, TCL, etc.) and dictionaries (CAD, AHw. etc.).
    Quotes in the text:

    Edzard (1959, 17); Maul (42008, 17); (see Machinist/Tadmor 1993, 147f.)

    In the reference list:

Boehmer, R. M. (1965): Die Entwicklung der Glyptik während der Akkad-Zeit. UAVA 4. Berlin
    Edzard, D. O. (1959): Enmebaragesi von Kiš, ZA 53, 9–26
Machinist, P./H. Tadmor (1993): Heavenly wisdom, in: M. E. Cohen [e. a.] (ed.), The tablet and the scroll. Near Eastern studies in honor of William W. Hallo. Bethesda, 146–151
Maul, S. M. (42008): Das Gilgamesch-Epos. Neu übersetzt und kommentiert. München

Citation of single pages, plates, figures etc.

    p. 4. 8. 12 = page 4 and 8 and 12
    pl. 4, 8. 12 = plate 4, figures 8 and 12
    pl. 4, 8; 12 = plate 4, figure 8 and plate 12

    4. Citing a reviewed book
The bibliographical data of reviewed books should be presented as follows:
CHARPIN, DOMINIQUE, DIETZ OTTO EDZARD und MARTEN STOL: Mesopotamien. Die altbabylonische Zeit. Annäherungen 4 (OBO 160/4). Fribourg: Academic Press und Göttingen: Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 2004. 1027 S. 16 × 23,5 cm. ISBN 3-7278-1488-8 (Academic Press), 3-525-53063-3 (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht). Preis: € 196,00/SFr. 248,00.

< ... > indicate sign(s) inadvertently omitted by the scribe
{ ... } indicate sign(s) inadvertently added by the scribe

    Quoting cuneiform texts
Referring to works: Gilgameš XI 100 = Gilgameš, tablet 11, line 100.
    Referring to copies:

    CT 23, 26: 8 = CT 23, plate 26, line 8
    CT 58, 53 rev. 15′ or CT 58, 53 r. 15′ = CT 58, text no. 53, reverse, line 15'
    CT 23, 26 ii 8 = CT 23, plate 26, column ii, line 8

For counting lines in texts of which the initial lines are not preserved, the "minute" sign should be used instead of the apostrophe, e.g. 15′.
