Iohannes Alexandrinus
Praecepta Tonica
Ed. by Xenis, Georgios A.
Series:Bibliotheca scriptorum Graecorum et Romanorum Teubneriana
Aims and Scope
The Praecepta Tonica by John of Alexandria (5th-6th cent. AD) is one of our richest extant sources for ancient Greek accentuation, and an indispensable tool for reconstructing Herodian’s De Prosodia Catholica, the most comprehensive treatment of the subject in antiquity. Despite its importance, it is available only in a seriously flawed edition prepared by Karl Wilhelm Dindorf in 1825. Xenis’s edition offers an authoritative new critical text based on a thorough consideration of the direct and indirect witnesses, and an extensive use of conjectural emendation. The division of the text into sections renders it more readable, while the rich collection of parallel passages places the treatise in its grammatical context. Exhaustive indices are provided at the end of the volume.
