Guiron le Courtois

The 13th-century prose novel Guiron le Courtois, marked by a fragmented manuscript history, tells the story of the fathers of the Arthurian heroes. The third branch of the work that is presented here illustrates the development from the previous texts, Meliadus and Guiron, and offers valuable insights into the narrative techniques and literary tastes of the period around 1240. Edited by Venceslas Bubenicek, this critical edition relies on four manuscripts and contains an analysis of the work and an edition of the Continuation based on ms. Ferrell 5.

Guiron le Courtois, roman en prose du XIIIe s., consacré à l’histoire des pères des héros arthuriens, se caractérise par une tradition manuscrite ‹éclatée›. La ‹troisième branche› de l’œuvre, éditée présentement, permet de mesurer le degré d’avancement des deux précédentes, un Meliadus et un Guiron. Roman original, elle illustre l’évolution des techniques narratives et des goûts littéraires vers 1240. L’édition critique procurée par Venceslas Bubenicek est fondée sur quatre mss. et suivie d’une analyse et d’une édition de la Continuation donnée par le ms. Ferrell 5.
