Aims and Scope
This volume contains Lohenstein’s last two plays, Ibrahim Sultan (in the 1679 new edition) and Sophonisbe (1680). Ibrahim Sultan covers events taken from 17th century Turkish history. The subject of Sophonisbe is an episode from the Second Punic War. Lohenstein’s own commentaries about these two plays are extensively amplified with bibliographical documentation and translations of all foreign-language citations. A special feature of this volume is the publication for the first time of manuscript versions of portions of Ibrahim Sultan. The commentary is structured in the same way as in Volumes 1 and 2.
