Aims and Scope
Der Pulitzer-Preis für Musik wurde 1943 eingeführt, um herausragende Werke amerikanischer Komponisten zu würdigen. In der Liste der Gewinner ist die erste Garde der US-amerikanischen Komponisten versammelt, beginnend beim ersten Preisträger William Schuman, über Aaron Copland, Charles Ives und Samuel Barber bis Ellen Taafe Zwilich. Seit 1997 sind die Kriterien dieser Kategorie erweitert worden, in diesem Jahr gewann mit Wynton Marsalis erstmals ein Musiker aus dem Bereich der afroamerikanischen Musiktradition den Preis.
