The series was founded in 1968 and contains monographs on Greek and Latin letters and on Ancient History. The volumes published so far present a wide range of topics: e.g. from the field of letters there are linguistic, textual and genre studies, and the works on Ancient history include investigations of the systems of Greek alliances or Roman foreign and financial policies under the Republic and the Empire. The decisive factor in accepting a work is the quality of its scholarship, and the editors are insistent that the studies call on a comprehensive array of relevant texts and sources and are meticulous in their critical evaluation. Until 2008, the series had been co-edited by Gustav-Adolf Lehmann.
