Abstract
Within the character of the schemer, the 18th century tragedy reflects the modern construction of individuality along with its inscribed actions and meanings. While the schemer is at first just a disruptive factor in a metaphysically construed reality, the character successively evolves to the rank of a quasi-providential instance of direction, which aims to radically manipulate social circumstances. The tragedy shows that the preparations of a freely operating intellect can become effective behind the actions of the schemer, in particular where his actions begin to emancipate themselves from their origin – his ruling employer – and step into the realm of autonomy.

Abstract
In his 1910 novel Helmut Harringa , Hermann Popert, who was a member of the »Guttempler-Orden«, went up against the alcohol addiction spreading at the time of Industrialisation. He demonstrated the devastating effects of alcoholism by means of two examples. In each case the victims belonged to »Nordlandsblut«, a group to which Popert assigned a very high moral value. They represented the ideal picture of mankind as propagated in the »Völkische Bewegung« before the First World War. The author envisioned a future world free of alcohol, in which a healthy, strong, happy and free »Volkstum« would rule. As much as Popert followed »völkische« maxims, one must not overlook the fact that his novel also belongs within the context of the »reform and search« movement taking place within German bourgeoisie at the time. This movement analysed the causes of social upheaval and tried to find ways out of the dilemma of alcohol addiction.

Abstract
The appearance of Goebbels on the political scene was largely motivated by his failure as a poet and writer. While his poetry at first paid homage to the comfort of a Biedermeier era idyll, it slowly departed from the vision of a historical intact world, not least under the pressures of lost faith and self-hatred. After 1924, Goebbels' initially vague hopes for an inner-worldly saviour focused more and more on the person of Hitler, whom he made the centre of a Führer myth encompassing art, religion and politics after 1933.

Abstract
Bernhard Schlink's novel Der Vorleser (1995; The Reader [1997]), won international attention and success, no doubt in part for its enthralling, intergenerational love story and its discussion of the particular questions facing and posed by »die Nachgeborenen«, the generation born after World War II. Even more notable, however, is Schlink's literary representation of the women who worked as guards in Nazi concentration and extermination camps, a group of women who have not been the focus of literary texts and are practically absent in historical or sociological research, especially in English-speaking sources. This essay provides a historical background to these women: their numbers, training, considerable power, and violent use of force, just to name a few aspects under consideration. In addition, a particular focus is placed on one such guard, Hermine Braunsteiner- Ryan, due to the similarities between this historical individual and Schlink's fictional character of Hanna Schmitz. The elucidation of the female guards' duties and responsibilities within the camps, moreover, calls into question the problem of illiteracy at the crux of Schlink's novel.

Abstract
The paper presents three essays focusing on the topic of »Literature and Medicine« and sketches an outline for a possible history of German literature from the perspective of medical history, covering the period from early modernity to the present. Models that offer possible links between the histories of literature, society, medicine and sociology are discussed within the context of current theories in the study of science.

Abstract
The question of Samuel Pufendorf's inclusion of medical and natural science in his thought horizon is considered a research problem today in view of the contents of his library. The essay examines this question from the perspective of the »double kappa« factor – the synthesis of Cartesianism and Coccejanism – in Pufendorf's thought. It thereby also evaluates new sources in the natural rights debate. At the centre of what Pufendorf considered the link between medicine and Cartesian philosophy lies the philosophical concept of science and knowledge followed by doctors and used by Pufendorf in his ethica civilis . This raises the biblical-hermeneutic question of how to evaluate the knowledge found in biblical texts without completely dismissing their authority in moral matters. The study examines the philosophical, theological and medical-historical contexts underlying Pufendorf's »philosophical science«.

Abstract
Based on the largely excellent new releases dealing with the topic of »medicine and enlightenment « over the past ten years, this collective review will present the interdisciplinary nature and fruits of this research, as well as an outline of the new avenues it has opened. The following areas will be discussed in more detail: medicine as an economic and political science; the conditions of an education in medical science; publicity and newspapers; the body and sexuality; human life sciences; medical daily culture. Finally, we point out the possibility of an understanding of education broadened by cultural theory.

Abstract
This essay links literary representations of contagious diseases with socio-historical and systems-theoretical approaches to the history of epidemics. First, it discusses select research approaches that have enriched the cultural-scientific treatment of literary representations of epidemics in recent years by opening up new perspectives. It then proposes several ways of (re-)reading certain literary texts using systems theory approaches. Here, literature is understood as a functional part of the communication process, through which the system ›society‹ constitutes itself and reacts to pathogenic irritation in a self-stabilising way. In order to avoid possible misunderstandings, the paper finally attempts to distinguish the term ›operative scheme‹ of social communication from the ontological concept of ›anthropological constants‹ on a methodological level.
