On Judging Art

From the book Aesthetics Today

  • Reinold Schmücker

Abstract

What is it to judge art? I will argue that this does not equate to judging artworks aesthetically. To judge an artwork rather means to identify functions it does, or could, fulfill and to relate them to one’s own hierarchy of functions that artefacts can fulfill. I will therefore defend a functionalist approach to judging art and also stress its consequences for a theory of art criticism and the value of art.
