NONVERBAL WORDS: INVESTIGATING ARTISTIC METHODS AND CODES

From the book Teaching Artistic Research

  • Stefan Wykydal

Abstract

This project proposes the idea of teaching artistic research in the context of a painting department at an art university. The creation of an “Archive of Methods” is used to strengthen the sensitivities of students to the underlying structures and morphologies of paintings. In an art world that deals mainly with “codes” and not “expressions” any more, student work with archives has changed. The quantity and speed of aesthetic availabilities often comes at the expense of the analysis of their formal and cultural configurations and structures. The verbal fixing of artistic methods can function as a self-reflective refinement which, if seen as a form of artistic research, links the traditional practice of compiling inventories with an artistic practice.
