Thus American executive producers selected Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar for the first television broadcast of the BBC-TV series that began in 1979 precisely because, for domestic audiences, it was the most familiar of all the Elizabethan plays. Yet, for those same audiences, Shakespeare and Caesar were now being fed back to them as the cultural property of Great Britain. At the outset of the television project, the head of the New York Shakespeare Festival, Joseph Papp, had protested against the use of American public funds (through the agency of PBS) to sup
