DESCRIPTION

The impact of toxic chemicals on ecosystem has been of great concern from last fifty years. Toxic effects of chemical and physical agents on living organisms, especially on populations and communities within defined ecosystems, and includes the transfer pathways of those agents and their integration with the environment are of great concern. Soil, sediment and water chemistry that explains the fate, behavior, sinks and effects of toxic substances such as metals, industrial and agrochemicals, nanomaterials, plastics and emerging contaminants. In most cases, situations encountered in the natural environment are, for the most part, unique and ever changing. Ecotoxicology covers a vast and diverse field of investigation. Ecotoxicology aspires to assess the impact of chemicals not only on individuals but also on populations and whole ecosystems. Aquatic and terrestrial ecotoxicology of organisms including microbes, invertebrates, vertebrate animals and plants. Remediation of wastewater and sludge, absorbents, biochar, green chemistry, chemical sensors and biosensor technology.
Significant Issues with Chemicals that have driven the development of Ecotoxicology

  1. DDT
  2. Cadmium
  3. Mercury
  4. PCBs
  5. Dioxins
  6. The contamination of pristine environments (eg Arctic) by atmospheric transport of organohalogens

Based on investigations and studies, the contaminants present suspected mutagenicity, teratogenicity, and carcinogenicity to ecosystem. Therefore, it is imperative to adequately treat/detoxify the toxicology for environmental safety. On the one hand, no sufficient and large-scale evidence has proven causal associations between contaminants and adverse effects on the human body. On the other hand, whereas the exposure levels in animal experiments may not represent human exposure levels in reality and long-term chronic exposure is seldom employed in animal models, we cannot ignore the adverse effects indicated by animal experiments. Further large-scale studies with improved designs are needed to provide more convincing and clear outcomes. Regarding ecotoxicity direct testing would allow for a major improvement in risk estimates. As to human health risks: including biological availability in risk estimates, more use of up to date knowledge about exposure routes, dose-effect relations and combination effects, and biomonitoring of effects are options for improvement.
This special issue focuses on understanding the exposure and effects of environmental contamination on organisms including human health. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Aquatic and terrestrial ecotoxicology of organisms
  • Mechanistic studies relating exposure, bioavailability and effects.
  • Evaluation of exposure, toxicity, and environmental risk
  • Methods in ecotoxicology that address modes of action
  • Soil, sediment and water chemistry
  • Spatial or temporal distribution of toxic substances
  • Environmental factors such as pH, organic matter, temperature and salinity.
  • Remediation techniques
