DESCRIPTION

Globally, the increasing senior population combined with a small population growth rate is resulting in a decline in the number caregivers, increased healthcare costs, and a lack of resources to treat patients. All this will put our senior population at risk and jeopardize their quality care. Mobile assistive robots are a great emerging technology being designed to address these issues.
This thematic special issue in Paladyn, Journal of Behavioral Robotics is devoted to the publication of high-quality research papers in some part presented during the Workshop on Mobile Robot Assistants for the Elderly, held in conjunction with IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation 2019 (ICRA 2019). The main focus of the Workshop will be putting together researchers interested in the design of mobile social and assistive robots for the elderly and letting them share and learn more about their respective progress and challenges. Many initiatives all around the world, large or small, have or are addressing this topic from different perspectives (e.g., applications, user-centric design or assessment, technology development), and still important issues need to be addressed for robots to be deployed to assist the elderly in daily activities.

Contributions to the Special Issue may address (but are not limited) to the following aspects:

  • Telepresence robotics for remote assistance
  • Robot hardware and software design for seniors
  • Sensing capabilities required for seniors-robot interaction
  • Autonomous decision-making for robot assistants
  • User-centered robot design in a socially and economically responsible fashion
  • Qualitative and quantitative approaches for evaluating the experience and impact of robots with seniors
  • Outcomes of human-robot interaction pilot studies with seniors
  • Long-term autonomy and deployment
  • Robot communication and interaction design

Authors are requested to submit their full research papers complying the general scope of the journal. The submitted papers will undergo the standard peer-review process before they can be accepted. Notification of acceptance will be communicated as we progress with the review process.

HOW TO SUBMIT

Before submission authors should carefully read the Instruction for Authors:
www.degruyter.com/view/supplement/s20814836_Instructions_for_Authors.pdf

Manuscripts can be written in TeX, LaTeX (strongly recommended) - the journal’s LATEX template. Please note that we do not accept papers in Plain TEX format. Text files can be also submitted as standard DOCUMENT (.DOC) which is acceptable if the submission in LATEX is not possible. For an initial submission, the authors are strongly advised to upload their entire manuscript, including tables and figures, as a single PDF file.

All submissions to the Special Issue must be made electronically via online submission system Editorial Manager: www.editorialmanager.com/paladyn/

All manuscripts will undergo the standard peer-review process (single blind, at least two independent reviewers). When entering your submission via online submission system please choose the option “SI on Mobile Robot Assistants for the Elderly”.

Submission of a manuscript implies that the work described has not been published before and it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else.

All authors, who would like to contribute to the Special Issue, are welcome to submit a paper by 30th September 2019.
Individual papers will be reviewed and published online as they arrive.

Contributors to the Special Issue will benefit from:

  • indexation in SCOPUS
  • NO submission and publication FEES
  • fair and constructive peer review provided by experts in the field
  • no space constraints
  • convenient, web-based paper submission and tracking system – Editorial Manager
  • free language assistance for authors from non-English speaking regions
  • quick online publication upon completing the publishing process (continuous publication model)
  • better visibility due to Open Access
  • long-term preservation of the content (articles archived in Portico)
  • extensive post-publication promotion for selected papers

We are looking forward to your submission!
