DESCRIPTION

Musical improvisation is normally understood as an act of immediate musical composition. By the same token, it belongs to the most common yet also most mysterious activities of musicians. The academic papers included in this special issue come from panel discussions with practitioners as well as musical performances at the conference “Exploring Musical Improvisation” held on 10/07/2017 in Preston, UK. The articles try to establish the meaning and value of improvisation in popular music at large and its various genres, such as jazz, blues, rock, post-rock, reggae, rap and electronic music.
