This special issue of Optical Data Processing and Storage gathers insightful review and new research papers on photosensitive soft materials and devices for fundamental methods and applications in diverse areas such as biomedical and environmental sensing, microfluidics, and optical manipulation. The scope is to explore the multidisciplinary interactions between the fields of optics and materials science for the development of inexpensive and reliable devices based on soft materials either sensitive to light action or able to photo-convert chemical or mechanical sensing.

Of particular interest are the topics of Soft Matter and Bio-photonics including but not limited to:

  • Photosensitive materials
  • Liquid crystals optics and technology
  • Organic photonics materials
  • Surfaces with light-induced wettability changes
  • Light interactions in biological media
  • Optical fiber sensors
  • Biosensors
  • Environmental sensors
  • Light-fueled micromachines
  • Structured light
  • Optical manipulation, particle separation and sorting
