Forschung benötigt Forschungsinfrastrukturen

Gegenwärtige Herausforderungen literaturwissenschaftlicher Netzwerkanalysen

Hahn, Carolin

For some time now, Social Network Analysis (SNA) has become a highly relevant procedure in digital figure analysis. This method offers a completely new approach to texts, allowing networks of figures, historical structural shifts, and the development of genres to be elucidated and visualised on the basis of quantitative analyses of extensive corpora. In the present paper, this is illustrated using accounts of journeys through Italy during the 18th and 19th centuries. Quantitative analysis, however, requires both an extensive corpus and high-quality digitised texts. Yet there is still much work to be done in this area: the present situation is marked by a scarcity of digitised works, an even greater scarcity of full-text versions, and a lack of research funding - especially for smaller projects. In order for quantitative methods such as Literary Network Analysis to yield reliable and illuminating results, coordinated and extensive efforts are first required to make the relevant source material digitally accessible and usable.
