A Critique of Curiosity: Magic and Fiction in Apuleius’ Metamorphoses

From the book Cultural Crossroads in the Ancient Novel

  • Cristiana Sogno

Abstract

This paper explores the connection between curiosity and fiction, which manifests itself in Lucius’ pursuit of magic and stories. Because magic is ultimately an excuse for Lucius to collect prurient and sensational stories, I argue that magic is a metaphor used by Apuleius to illustrate the magic of literature, the pleasure of fiction, and the ambition for literary success.
