Abstract
Political speeches in vernacular languages can be considered as an act of emancipation of the Latin speech, but even when changing the language, they usually remain in the traditions of classical rhetoric for a long time. In a historical perspective, political rhetoric can be subdivided into several types of speech such as throne speech, parliamentary speech, public speech. The Roman languages developed a wide range of political speeches, not only in standard languages but also in minority languages and dialects. The present chapter analyses the history of political speech in France and gives further details of the traditions in other countries such as Italy and Spain.
