5. Contractualism for Media Ethics

From the book Communication and Media Ethics

  • Stephen J.A. Ward

Abstract

The chapter explores this application of contractualism to media ethics. After defining the contractual approach in general, the chapter shows how contractual concepts have played an important part in the history of journalism ethics and continue to underwrite today’s codes and writings about journalism ethics. The chapter considers whether this framework continues to hold promise today for the new ethics of digital, global media, and what challenges lie ahead.
