4. Thermodynamic modelling of cement hydration: Portland cements – blended cements – calcium sulfoaluminate cements

From the book Cementitious Materials

  • Barbara Lothenbach and Frank Winnefeld

Abstract

This chapter gives a short introduction to thermodynamic calculations applied to different cementitious systems and shows possible applications: hydration of Portland and calcium sulfoaluminate cements as well as the effect of limestone and fly ash on the composition of hydrated PC and the effect of calcium sulfate, belite, and limestone on hydrated calcium sulfoaluminate cements. The results of thermodynamic modelling are summarized in binary and ternary diagrams in order to visualize the main effects of the clinker composition on hydrate assemblage and volume.
