Relations between Germany and the Soviet Union from the time of Hitler’s seizure of power in 1933 until the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 helped shape the history of the 20^th century. Volume 2 of the four-volume work contains nearly 700 documents from German and Russian archives, most of them previously unpublished. It covers political, economic, military, cultural, and scientific issues.

"Überhaupt ist die Einleitung wie schon beim ersten Band der Edition unentbehrlich, um die in den Dokumenten behandelten Vorgänge verstehen zu können. Eine lückenlose Geschichte der diplomatischen Beziehungen ist auch jetzt noch nicht gegeben – weiterhin werden Dokumente etwa militärischer Art im heutigen Russland geheim gehalten. Und doch bedeutet die Edition einen weiteren großen Schritt zum Verständnis der für das 20. Jahrhundert so fundamentalen Beziehungen zwischen Deutschland und der Sowjetunion."
