Kulturmission oder Herrschaftssymbolik?

Zur Verbreitung deutscher Zeichensysteme in der „Musterkolonie“ Tsingtau

Mathias A. Schöner

The German colony of Tsingtau was designed as a hub for German culture in China by the German administration. Using the concept of semiotic landscapes, this paper explores how German culture was meant to be introduced into Tsingtau. The findings show that while the German political influence may have been large at times it did not transform into significant cultural leverage.
