Abstract
This is a study of spoken Maltese-English. The focus is on the phonetic characteristics that can be considered as identifying the place of Maltese bilingual speakers along the continuum first discussed by Borg (1988). Sociolinguistic considerations are made on the basis of the speakers’ use of English and Maltese. An attempt is made to gauge the speakers in relative terms to each other primarily on the basis of the phonetic quality of their spoken English within the phonological system adopted. Reference is also made to other linguistic features that distinguish the speakers.
