Faith, Hope, and Charity was written in 1932–1933 together with the journalist Wilhelm Lukas Kristl. Based on Kristil’s report of the court case of Klara Gramm, the piece depicts the tragic history of Elizabeth, a traveling salesperson who falls prey to the ruthless application of the “fine print.” The genesis of the piece goes back to ideas that Horváth presented in his earlier work Kasimir und Karoline.
