Understanding the challenges of integration from the refugee perspective

From the book Responsibility for Refugee and Migrant Integration

  • Debora B. F. Kayembe

Abstract

The challenges associated with refugee and asylum seeker resettlement are complex and multifaceted. This chapter offers case reports and insights regarding the complexities of integration by exploring how some of the policies directed at facilitating this actually fall short because of basic communication barriers. More attention needs to be paid to how well refugees understand the cultures of the new societies in which they are expected to settle. Drawing upon the first-hand experiences of an interpreter for Congolese refugees in Britain and the United States, this chapter identifies some of the major issues that confront people during the first year of their resettlement.
