Due to competition, scientific institutions are increasingly making use of concepts and instruments from business administration, in a way similar to New Public Management reforms, which advocate a business-like approach to the running of public service institutions. This study is concerned with the question of how bibliometric indicators would have to be defined in order to meet scientific and economic requirements. For this purpose, different types of bibliometric indicators, their way of functioning and their possible applications are considered.
