3.3 The Journal Impact Factor: A Bibliometric Indicator with a Long Past

From the book Handbook Bibliometrics

  • Dirk Tunger

Abstract

No bibliometric indicator in science is as well known, discussed, misused, hated and controversial as the Journal Impact Factor. Although it is polarized, it is still an important part of the development of bibliometric indicators (cf. Dong et al., 2005). This paper will briefly outline the development and importance of the Journal Impact Factor (JIF).
