6.1 Web of Science, Scopus and Further Citation Databases

From the book Handbook Bibliometrics

  • Ingrid Bauer

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to give an overview of the most important databases on the market that make bibliometric analysis possible: Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Dimensions. This overview includes the historical background, the information about the owner of the database, the coverage (philosophy), and thus the selection procedure concerning publications and the most important metrics used and developed in those databases. Most of the information has been taken from the databases themselves as well as from their webpages. Having said that, this chapter is not a scientific in-depth analysis, but should give practical knowledge about the databases mentioned.
